The flooded field is the reason for the cancellation, and because introduces a reason.
Join these sentences: Ryan had practised for weeks. He forgot his lines on stage.
Answer: Although Ryan had practised for weeks, he forgot his lines on stage.
The two facts pull against each other, and although marks the one you would not expect: practice, yet a slip.
Complete the sentence: Priya is joining the choir this year, ______
Answer: isn't she?
A positive statement with is takes the negative tag isn't, and Priya is she.
Complete the sentence: The twins have not finished their project, ______
Answer: have they?
A negative statement takes a positive tag, and the verb to repeat is have.
Join these sentences: Mei left the house at six. She wanted to catch the first ferry.
Answer: Mei left the house at six so that she could catch the first ferry.
So that introduces the purpose: she left early in order to catch the ferry.
Rewrite without changing the meaning: "I have lost my ez-link card," said Danish.
Answer: Danish said that he had lost his ez-link card.
In reported speech the pronouns move to match the speaker and the verb steps back a tense: I have becomes he had.
Join these sentences: The boy won the poster contest. He sits beside me.
Answer: The boy who sits beside me won the poster contest.
Who introduces the part that tells you which boy, and it goes straight after the boy.
Join these sentences: The box was very heavy. Ilyas could not lift it.
Answer: The box was too heavy for Ilyas to lift.
Too ... to joins the two ideas in one: the weight is the reason he could not lift it, and the object is not repeated.
Join these sentences: Farah plays the piano. Farah plays the violin.
Answer: Farah plays the piano as well as the violin.
As well as joins the two instruments into one sentence about what Farah plays.
Join these sentences: Grandma was watering the plants. The kettle boiled.
Answer: The kettle boiled while Grandma was watering the plants.
While joins two things happening at the same time, and the longer action takes was watering.
