Answers and explanations for all 10 questions

Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. A rectangle measures 14 cm by 9 cm. What is its area?

    Answer: 126 cm²

    14 × 9 = 126 cm².

  2. A rectangle has an area of 84 cm² and a length of 12 cm. What is its width?

    Answer: 7 cm

    84 ÷ 12 = 7 cm.

  3. What is the area of a square with sides of 13 cm?

    Answer: 169 cm²

    13 × 13 = 169 cm².

  4. A rectangle 12 cm by 8 cm has a smaller rectangle 4 cm by 3 cm cut out of one corner. What is the area of the shape that is left?

    Answer: 84 cm²

    12 × 8 = 96 cm², 4 × 3 = 12 cm², and 96 − 12 = 84 cm².

  5. A rectangle has a perimeter of 46 cm. Its length is 15 cm. What is its area?

    Answer: 120 cm²

    Half the perimeter is 23 cm, so the width is 23 − 15 = 8 cm, and 15 × 8 = 120 cm².

  6. Four squares of side 9 cm are joined in a row to make a long rectangle. What is the perimeter of that rectangle?

    Answer: 90 cm

    The rectangle is 36 cm by 9 cm, so the perimeter is 2 × (36 + 9) = 90 cm.

  7. A square has an area of 144 cm². What is its perimeter?

    Answer: 48 cm

    12 × 12 = 144, so each side is 12 cm and the perimeter is 4 × 12 = 48 cm.

  8. A rectangular field is 25 m long and 18 m wide. A path is built all the way around its edge. How long is the path?

    Answer: 86 m

    Perimeter = 2 × (25 + 18) = 86 m.

  9. A square photo of side 16 cm is mounted in the middle of a square card of side 20 cm. What area of card is left showing?

    Answer: 144 cm²

    20 × 20 = 400 cm², 16 × 16 = 256 cm², and 400 − 256 = 144 cm².

  10. A floor measures 40 cm by 30 cm. How many square tiles of side 5 cm are needed to cover it exactly?

    Answer: 48

Floor area is 1200 cm² and each tile covers 25 cm², so 1200 ÷ 25 = 48 tiles.
