Based on the set-ups above, what is the volume of the stone?
Answer: 18 ml
The stone pushes aside its own volume of water, so the rise in level is the stone's volume: 68 − 50 = 18 ml.
A spoonful of sugar is stirred into a glass of water until it disappears from view. What happens to the total mass?
Answer: It stays the same.
Dissolving spreads the sugar too finely to see, but every particle is still there. The mass of glass, water and sugar together is unchanged.
Which two statements about gases are correct?
Answer: A and B only
A gas spreads to fill its container and can be compressed. It still has mass and still takes up space, which is what makes it matter.
Based on the table above, which object has the largest volume?
Answer: Q
Volume is the rise in level: 12 ml, 21 ml and 7 ml. Q pushed aside the most water, so Q is the largest.
A sealed flask of water is weighed, then heated until much of the water has turned to steam inside it, and weighed again. What is found?
Answer: The mass is the same as before.
The flask is sealed, so the same water is inside either way. Turning liquid into gas rearranges it; it does not change how much there is.

Answer: Gases can be squashed into a much smaller space than they normally fill.
Unlike solids and liquids, a gas can be compressed a great deal. The cylinder holds the same amount of gas that would fill a room at ordinary pressure.
