Answers and explanations for all 8 questions

Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. A family in Zone B sends two children on the bus. What is the monthly total?

    Answer: $151.20

The first child pays $84 in full. The second pays 20% less, which is $67.20. Together that is $151.20.

  2. A Zone A pupil has CCA on two afternoons a week. What must the family pay each month?

Answer: $98 — the $68 fare plus the $30 afternoon pass

The fare does not cover CCA days, and the separate afternoon pass is $30 a month in any zone: $68 plus $30.

  3. A family moves in March from Zone A to Zone C. What does the scheme require?

Answer: They must reapply, and the Zone C fare starts the following month.

Pupils who move house must reapply, and the new zone fare applies from the following month.

  4. What does the last line tell a family living 6 km from the school?

Answer: Applying early matters, because places do not go by distance.

Places go in order of application, and the fact that Zone C filled first in 2026 tells a distant family that waiting is the risk.

  5. How many pupils said they revise best at home?

    Answer: 150

The two at-home rows are 96 and 54, which come to 150.

  6. How many more pupils chose a library than chose somewhere else?

    Answer: 56

The libraries take 41 and 32, which is 73. Subtracting the 17 who chose somewhere else leaves 56.

  7. What can you say about the 71 pupils mentioned in the chart?

Answer: They are part of the 96 who chose a desk at home.

The words "of the 96" mark the 71 as a subgroup, not an addition. Reading it as an extra group would push the total above 240.

  8. Why does the chart end by saying the survey did not ask about examination results?

Answer: To stop the reader concluding that one revision place works better than another.

The chart says where pupils believe they revise best. Without results, nothing in it shows that any place actually works better.
