  1. How many 1/4-litre glasses can be filled from 3 litres of juice?

    Answer: 12

    3 ÷ 1/4 = 3 × 4 = 12 glasses.

  2. 3/4 of a cake is shared equally among 6 children. What fraction of the whole cake does each child get?

    Answer: 1/8

    3/4 ÷ 6 = 3/4 × 1/6 = 3/24 = 1/8.

  3. 2 1/2 × 1 1/5 = ?

    Answer: 3

    2 1/2 = 5/2 and 1 1/5 = 6/5, and 5/2 × 6/5 = 3.

  4. Mei had a ribbon. She used 1/3 of it, then 1/4 of the remainder. What fraction of the ribbon was left?

    Answer: 1/2

    After 1/3, 2/3 remains. 1/4 of 2/3 is 1/6 used next, so 2/3 − 1/6 = 1/2 is left.

  5. What is 3/8 of 96?

    Answer: 36

    96 ÷ 8 = 12 for one eighth, and 3 × 12 = 36.

  6. 5/6 of a number is 45. What is the number?

    Answer: 54

    5 units = 45, so 1 unit = 9, and the whole number is 6 × 9 = 54.

  7. 1 2/3 + 2 3/4 = ?

    Answer: 4 5/12

    1 2/3 = 5/3 = 20/12 and 2 3/4 = 11/4 = 33/12, so the total is 53/12 = 4 5/12.

  8. A tank was 5/8 full. After 12 litres were poured out, it was 1/4 full. What is the capacity of the tank?

    Answer: 32 ℓ

    5/8 − 1/4 = 3/8 of the tank is 12 ℓ, so 1/8 is 4 ℓ and the whole tank is 32 ℓ.

  9. Which of these fractions is the smallest?

    Answer: 2/5

    2/5 = 0.4, 7/12 ≈ 0.58, 3/4 = 0.75 and 5/6 ≈ 0.83, so 2/5 is the smallest.

  10. A shop had 240 apples. It sold 1/3 of them in the morning and 3/8 of the remainder in the afternoon. How many apples were left?

    Answer: 100

    Morning leaves 160. Afternoon sells 3/8 of 160 = 60, leaving 160 − 60 = 100.
