Answers and explanations for all 10 questions

Every answer with the reasoning behind it. Worth reading after you have tried the set — or on its own, if you are a parent marking it.

  1. Write 4 m 35 cm in metres.

    Answer: 4.35 m

    35 cm is 0.35 m, so 4 m 35 cm = 4.35 m.

  2. How many grams are there in 5 kg 60 g?

    Answer: 5060

    5 kg = 5000 g, and 5000 + 60 = 5060 g.

  3. A parcel has a mass of 2 kg 450 g and another has a mass of 1 kg 875 g. What is their total mass?

    Answer: 4 kg 325 g

    2450 g + 1875 g = 4325 g, which is 4 kg 325 g.

  4. A jug holds 3 ℓ of water. 7 glasses of 250 ml each are poured out. How much water is left?

    Answer: 1 ℓ 250 ml

    7 × 250 ml = 1750 ml, and 3000 − 1750 = 1250 ml, which is 1 ℓ 250 ml.

  5. A rope 18 m long is cut into 8 equal pieces. How long is each piece?

    Answer: 225 cm

    18 m is 1800 cm, and 1800 ÷ 8 = 225 cm.

  6. Which of these is the longest?

    Answer: 2.5 m

In centimetres they are 250, 205, 195 and 225, so 2.5 m is the longest.

  7. Each box of nails has a mass of 1 kg 250 g. What is the total mass of 12 boxes?

    Answer: 15 kg

    12 × 1250 g = 15000 g, which is 15 kg.

  8. A tank held 8 ℓ of petrol. 2 ℓ 750 ml was used. How much petrol was left?

    Answer: 5 ℓ 250 ml

    8000 ml − 2750 ml = 5250 ml, which is 5 ℓ 250 ml.

  9. A plank is 3 m 20 cm long. Three pieces of 85 cm each are cut from it. What length of plank is left?

    Answer: 65 cm

    3 × 85 = 255 cm cut off, and 320 − 255 = 65 cm left.

  10. Write 2 ℓ 40 ml in litres.

    Answer: 2.04 ℓ

    1 ℓ = 1000 ml, so 40 ml is 0.04 ℓ, giving 2.04 ℓ.
