Breathing and blood: two systems doing one job

The respiratory system gets oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out. The circulatory system carries them to and from every cell. Neither works without the other, and papers test the join between them.

01 The path air takes

Air travels one way in and the same way out. Learn the order and any blockage question follows from it.

Air is warmed and filtered in the nose, then travels down to the air sacs.
  1. Nose (W) — warms, moistens and filters the air. Hairs and mucus trap dust.
  2. Windpipe (X) — carries air down to the lungs.
  3. Lungs (Y) — where the exchange happens.
  4. Air sacs (Z) — tiny bags with very thin walls and a large surface, where gases cross into and out of the blood.

02 What actually gets exchanged

At the air sacs, oxygen moves from the air into the blood and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the air. Both directions happen at the same place, at the same time.

So breathed-out air is not “used up air”. It still contains plenty of oxygen — just less than breathed-in air, and more carbon dioxide and water vapour.

03 The blood's round trip

The heart pumps blood; blood vessels carry it; the blood does the carrying. Every cell in the body sits near a vessel.

Oxygen-rich blood leaves the lungs, goes to the heart, and is pumped out to the body. Oxygen-poor blood returns from the body to the heart and is pumped to the lungs to collect more.

So blood passes through the heart twice on a full circuit. That is the detail P6 questions ask about.

04 Why exercise changes both

During exercise, muscles work harder, so they need more oxygen and produce more carbon dioxide.

Breathing gets faster and deeper to take in more oxygen and remove more carbon dioxide. The heart beats faster to move that blood round more quickly.

A question asking why the pulse rises after running wants both halves: more oxygen is needed by the muscles, and it must be delivered faster. Naming only one half usually costs the mark.

05 How to say them

07 Mistakes worth knowing about

Each of these is wrong. Decide why before you open it.

  • “Breathed-out air has no oxygen in it.”

    It has less, not none. That is why rescue breathing works at all.

  • “We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.”

    Air is a mixture both ways. We breathe in air containing more oxygen and out air containing more carbon dioxide.

  • “The lungs pump the blood.”

    The heart pumps. The lungs are where the gases cross into and out of the blood.

  • “Blood goes round once and comes back.”

    It passes through the heart twice on a full circuit — once on the way to the lungs, once on the way to the body.

  • “The pulse rises because you are tired.”

    The muscles need more oxygen and are making more carbon dioxide, so the heart beats faster to move blood round more quickly.
